10 Budget Questions Every Couple Must Ask
Before You Spend a Single Dollar
The couples who stay on budget are the ones who had honest money conversations before booking anything. These ten questions cover the decisions that most commonly cause overspending, arguments, or regret.
The Essential Questions
- What is our absolute maximum spend? Not what we hope to spend — what number would cause real financial stress if exceeded?
- Who is contributing, and are there strings attached? Parent contributions sometimes come with guest list expectations or vendor preferences.
- What matters most to each of us? Rank your top 3 priorities. If they differ, negotiate budget allocation early.
- What does our guest count look like? Every guest adds $75-150 in catering costs. A-list only, or wide net?
- What are our non-negotiables? Identify 3-5 things you absolutely must have and 3-5 things you can skip entirely.
- How will we track spending? Agree on a shared spreadsheet or app before any deposits are paid.
- What is our contingency fund? Set aside 5-10% for unexpected costs. Every wedding has them.
