Hidden Wedding Costs Most Couples Miss
The Budget Gap Nobody Talks About
The final bill is almost always 15–25% higher than the original budget. The culprit? Hidden costs that don't appear on any vendor quote until it's too late.
1. Service Charges and Gratuities
Many venues add a 20–25% service charge plus separate gratuities. A $10,000 catering bill can become $14,000.
2. Overtime Fees
If your reception runs 30 minutes past the contracted time, venues charge $200–$500 per hour.
3. Vendor Meals
You feed your photographer, videographer, DJ, and planner. At $50–$100 per head, six vendors add $300–$600.
4. Alterations
Wedding dress alterations cost $200–$800. Suit alterations run $50–$200. Rarely included in the purchase price.
5. Day-Of Coordination
Even without a full planner, you need someone managing the day. Day-of coordinators charge $800–$2,000.
6. Postage
Save-the-dates, invitations, RSVP returns, and thank-you cards. Budget $200–$400 for postage alone.
7. Cake Cutting Fee
Some venues charge $1–$5 per slice to cut and serve. For 150 guests, that's $150–$750.
8. Trials and Tastings
Makeup trials ($75–$150), hair trials ($50–$100), food tastings ($50–$200) are billed separately.
The Safety Net
Add a 10–15% contingency line to your budget. If your planned spend is $25,000, set aside $2,500–$3,750.
