The Hidden Costs That Blow Up Wedding Budgets

The average couple goes 23% over their initial wedding budget, according to The Knot 2025 Real Weddings Study. The culprit is almost always line items they never thought to include.

15 Costs Most Couples Forget

1. Marriage License (-100)

Varies by state/county. Some require blood tests or waiting periods. Check requirements 2+ months ahead.

2. Alterations (-800)

Wedding dress alterations are almost never included in the purchase price. Budget for 2-3 fittings.

3. Postage (-300)

Invitations, save-the-dates, RSVP cards, and thank-you notes. Square or heavy envelopes cost extra.

4. Vendor Meals (-50/person)

Photographer, DJ, and videographer need to eat too. Most contracts require you to provide meals.

5. Gratuities (-1,500)

15-20% tip for caterer staff, DJ, photographer assistant, hair and makeup artists.

6. Ceremony Programs (-150)

Printed programs for guests. Optional but appreciated at religious or cultural ceremonies.

7. Day-Of Coordinator (-1,500)

Even if you planned everything yourself, someone needs to manage the timeline on the day.

8. Parking and Transportation (-500)

Valet service, shuttle buses, or reserved parking for guests at hotels.

9. Welcome Bags (-20/bag)

For out-of-town guests at their hotel. Snacks, water, local treats, itinerary card.

10. Cake Cutting Fee (-3/slice)

Many venues charge per slice to cut and serve the cake, even if you bring your own.

11. Corkage Fee (-25/bottle)

If you bring your own wine, venues charge a corkage fee per bottle opened.

12. Lighting (-1,000)

Venue overhead lighting is often harsh. String lights, uplighting, and candles transform the space.

13. Dance Floor Rental (-600)

Not all venues have a built-in dance floor. Portable floors are essential for grass or concrete.

14. Hair and Makeup Trials (-200)

Always do a trial run. The trial fee is usually separate from the day-of price.

15. Preservation (-500)

Dress cleaning and preservation, photo album creation, video editing upgrades.

Building a Realistic Budget

Start with the total you can afford. Add 15-20% as a buffer. Then allocate using the 50/15/10 rule: 50% venue and catering, 15% attire and beauty, 10% photography, remainder for everything else.
