Build a Wedding Arch for Under $100

Why Build Your Own Arch

Rental wedding arches typically cost $150-$400 for a single day. Building your own for under $100 gives you a keepsake you can repurpose as a garden trellis, photo backdrop, or anniversary decoration. This guide covers a simple rectangular arch that two people can build in about three hours.

Materials List

Total: approximately $100

Step 1: Cut the Uprights

Cut two of the 8-foot boards to 7 feet — these are your vertical posts. Cut the remaining two 8-foot boards to 6 feet for the cross bars. Sand all cut edges smooth.

Step 2: Assemble the Frame

Lay the two 7-foot uprights parallel on the ground, about 5 feet apart. Attach the 6-foot cross bar at the top using L-brackets and screws on each side. Repeat with the second cross bar positioned 6 inches below the first. This double-bar top gives you more surface area for draping and greenery.

Step 3: Add Stability

Cut the two 6-foot boards into four 3-foot sections. Attach two to the base of each upright as cross-braces, forming an L-shaped foot on each side. These feet keep the arch stable in light wind. For extra stability, fill two decorative buckets with sand or rocks and place them over the feet.

Step 4: Finish the Wood

Apply stain for a rustic look or white paint for a clean, modern aesthetic. Two coats with light sanding between gives a professional finish. Let it dry completely — at least 4 hours — before adding decorations.

Step 5: Add Greenery and Draping

Drape the fabric over the top cross bar, letting it cascade down one or both sides. Secure with small nails or fabric tape. Wrap artificial greenery garlands around the top corners and along one side of the arch, leaving some wood visible for contrast.

Transport Tips

Build the arch in two pieces (two uprights connected by one cross bar each) and join them at the venue with the final cross bar. This makes it transportable in a standard SUV. Bring extra screws and a drill for on-site assembly.
